College Football Rankings - 27 Oct

Two more undefeated teams went down yesterday, Texas Tech in a close battle with Oklahoma, and Missouri, which lost to South Carolina. That leaves 8 teams without a loss, six from AQ conferences, with 6 weeks to go before bowl season begins. How many of them will remain undefeated, and which ones will they be? Here are my full rankings, along with each team's predicted final record and odds of finishing undefeated:

Ohio State finally made it to the top 10 this week, riding a blowout of Penn State and an undefeated record that stretches back for a season and a half. Their win over Northwestern a couple weeks ago is looking less impressive with each loss the Wildcats pile up (4 straight now), but their season-opening win over Buffalo is starting to look like it means something, as the Bulls have positioned themselves as the likely champion of the MAC East division, which would give them a chance to take down the "mighty" Northern Illinois Huskies in the MAC title game.

Missouri did more than just blow a chance at a perfect season when they gave up a 17-0 4th quarter lead in their loss to South Carolina yesterday, they also may have given up a chance at the SEC East title, which they would have nearly wrapped up with a win. They still have to face Ole Miss and Texas A&M to close the season, and a single loss could mean that the Gamecocks get a chance at Alabama in the title game instead of the Tigers.

Of all of the remaining undefeated teams, none looked weaker than Miami on Saturday. They needed 14 4th quarter points to come back and defeat Wake Forest, a perennial ACC cellar dweller, just to maintain their perfect record, but the near miss knocked them from the top 10. The undefeated record will follow this week when Florida State dominates the Hurricanes in a Sunshine State showdown.

Houston joined the top 25 this week after a road blowout of Rutgers, and with their only loss coming to BYU, #11 in my rankings, plus a neutral site win over a strong Rice team, the Cougars have become part of the conversation to win the AAC. They would have had a chance, too, if they didn't have to face fellow challengers Louisville and UCF on the road in consecutive weeks in November.
