After back-to-back 1300-yard rushing seasons at Virginia, and an ACC Player of the Year award, Tiki Barber was drafted by the New York Giants in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft.

In his first 3 seasons, Barber was used mostly as a punt returner, gaining less than 1000 yards rushing combined in those three years, but he was used to catch passes out of the backfield, with over 1200 yards receiving over that same time.

He became the starter in 2000, and he gained 1006 yards on the ground and a career-high 719 receiving that year, showing that he had the ability to be an every-down running back. He helped lead the Giants to the Super Bowl that year, where they were blown out by the Ravens 34-7.

After being slowed a little by injuries in 2001, he came back strong in 2002, gaining 1387 yards rushing and scoring 11 touchdowns on the ground, while amassing 1984 scrimmage yards, 4th-best in the NFL. After a slightly down 2003 season, he really hit his stride in 2004.

That year, he rushed for 1518 yards and 13 touchdowns, the best of his career, and he led the league with 2096 yards from scrimmage. In the final game of the season, he broke the Giants' single-season and career rushing records, both of which he still holds.

He had his best season in 2005, when he rushed for 1860 yards on 5.2 yards per carry, and finished with 2390 scrimmage yards, enough to lead the league again, and currently the 4th-highest total in history. His great season earned him his first All-Pro First Team nod, and also got him 4th place in the MVP race.

Early in the 2006 season, he announced that it would be his last. He had another great season, gaining 1662 yards on the ground, and 2127 total from scrimmage, giving him the highest total in both categories for a player in his final season. He is also one of 4 players ever to have 3 straight 2000-yard scrimmage seasons. True to his word, he retired at the end of the season, his 10th in the NFL.

Barber is one of the few running backs ever to retire at his peak. He is currently ranked #15 all-time in scrimmage yards and #24 in yards per carry, and is one of only 4 players ever to have over 5000 yards both rushing and receiving. He finished his career with 2 of the top 50 rushing yard seasons in history, and 3 of the top 50 scrimmage yard seasons ever, and though he probably had several more good seasons in the tank when he retired, there is no doubt that he is one of the best to ever play the game.

After a great college career in which he set numerous records at Washington, Hugh McElhenny was drafted with the 9th overall pick in the 1952 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

McElhenny was an all-around player throughout his career. He was a good rusher, but he also caught a lot of passes, and was one of the top kick returners in the league. As a rookie, he led the league with 7.0 yards per carry, which is the 11th-best average of all time, and had over 1000 scrimmage yards as he was named to the All-Pro First Team.

His production dropped to 4.5 yards per carry in his second season, but he was still named to the All-Pro First Team, then he started off the 1954 season very strong, leading the league with 515 rushing yards and 8.0 yards per carry through 6 games, when he went down with a separated shoulder that ended his season. Even though he missed half of the season, he still received an MVP vote.

His return from injury was not smooth, as he gained only 3.6 yards per carry in 1955, finishing the season with only 327 rushing yards. He was finally back at full health in 1956, when he set a career high with 916 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns, as well as 1109 scrimmage yards, which got him onto the All-Pro Second Team.

He made his only playoff appearance as a 49er in 1957, rushing for 82 yards and gaining 96 through the air against the Lions, but San Francisco lost the game in spite of McElhenny's performance. He made a 5th Pro Bowl appearance in 1958, but injuries slowed him for the 2 years after that, and he was made available for the 1961 Expansion Draft, where he was picked by the Minnesota Vikings.

In his first season with Minnesota, he rushed for 570 yards and gained 283 through the air, which earned him a 6th Pro Bowl berth. At that point his age finally started to catch up to him, and he played one more year with Minnesota, followed by one each with the Giants and Lions, before retiring after the 1964 season.

When he retired, McElhenny was #3 in history in all-purpose yards, and he is currently #24 on the all-time list for yards per carry, the category where he led the league as a rookie and was on pace to lead it again in his third season before his shoulder injury. He was voted into the Pro Bowl 6 times, and into the Hall of Fame in 1970, and 60 years after his retirement is still one of the greatest of all time.

After rushing for 1127 yards and 8 touchdowns as a senior at Syracuse and finishing 4th in the Heisman voting, Larry Csonka was drafted by the Miami Dolphins with the 8th overall pick in the 1968 NFL Draft.

Csonka was a decent fullback during his first couple of years in Miami, but missed several games each year with concussions. When Don Shula was hired as coach before the 1970 season, he taught Csonka how to protect his head while running to reduce the likelihood of concussions, and he didn't miss a single game over the next 4 seasons.

In 1970, he rushed for 874 yards and 6 touchdowns, and was named to his first Pro Bowl. In 1971, he was the best running back in the league, gaining 1051 yards on the ground and scoring 7 touchdowns, gaining 5.4 yards per carry, best in the league, and helped lead the Dolphins to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Cowboys 24-3.

In 1972, he and Mercury Morris became the first pair of teammates in history to each rush for 1000 yards, with Csonka gaining a career-high 1117 on the ground. The Dolphins finished that year undefeated, and when they returned to the Super Bowl, Csonka gained 112 rushing yards in their 14-7 victory over the Redskins to cap off a perfect season, still the most recent one in the NFL.

Csonka was still very good in 1973, reaching 1000 rushing yards for the 3rd year in a row, and leading the Dolphins to their 3rd straight Super Bowl. Csonka was named MVP of that Super Bowl after scoring 2 touchdowns and setting a then-record with 145 rushing yards in the game, winning a second straight championship.

The next season, Csonka gained only 749 rushing yards, but had 9 touchdowns, his best to that point in his career, but the Dolphins were upset in the playoffs, preventing a third straight title. After that season, he and two teammates decided to leave Miami to join the new World Football League, where they played for the Memphis Southmen.

After the WFL folded early in 1976, Csonka joined the New York Giants as a free agent, where he played 3 seasons, but never reached 600 yards in a season or 4 yards per carry. When his contract ended, he signed with the Dolphins as a free agent, gaining 837 yards and scoring a career-best 12 touchdowns while earning the Comeback Player of the Year award. After the season, he was unable to come to terms on a new contract with Miami, and instead retired.

For a few years in the early 1970s, Csonka was a star player on one of the greatest teams in the league, and was instrumental in 2 championship runs. He received MVP votes in 2 different seasons, and was among the league leaders in yards per carry during his entire first tenure with the Dolphins. His bruising style probably led to his early decline, but he was great at his peak, and is one of the greatest players of all time.

After playing fullback at Marquette and playing in the first ever Cotton Bowl, Ward Cuff was drafted by the New York Giants in the 4th round of the 1937 NFL Draft.

In his first 4 seasons, Cuff was used mainly as a placekicker, leading the league in scoring during his second season, with the most extra points and field goals of any player. The Giants won the championship that season, with Cuff losing 12 yards on the ground, but scoring on a field goal and 2 extra points in the 23-17 victory over the Packers.

He was used more in the backfield over the next couple of seasons, but he really broke out in 1943, when he led the league with 6.5 yards per carry while finishing 4th in rushing yards. He led the league in yards per carry again in 1944, this time with 5.6 yards each time he got the ball. He led the Giants to the playoffs in both of those seasons, but fell short of a title each time, though he had 80 yards and a touchdown in the title game in 1944.

He played one more season with the Giants, then he was traded to the Chicago Cardinals before the 1946 season, where he was back to mostly playing kicker. He then moved on to the Green Bay Packers for one final season, where he led the league in field goals made for the 4th time in his career.

Cuff was a very good kicker throughout his NFL career, but when he was given the chance to start at running back, he did so at a high level, leading the league in average yards twice in a row. He contributed to a championship, though more as a kicker than a back, but also helped get the Giants to 3 other title games, and should be recognized as one of the best to play the game.

After switching from quarterback to running back for his senior season at USC, Frank Gifford gained 1019 scrimmage yards that year, which was enough for the New York Giants to make him the 11th overall pick in the 1952 NFL Draft.

During the era in which he played, positions were not quite as specialized, but he primarily played halfback in the NFL, though he also played safety and wide receiver at times. His all-around play earned him trips to the Pro Bowl in his second and third seasons, even though he hadn't really blossomed as a running back yet.

1956 was his breakout season. He rushed for 819 yards, the best of his career, and gained another 603 yards through the air, for a total of 1422, best in the league. He was named the league MVP that season, and capped it off by leading the Giants to a championship, rushing for 30 yards and gaining 131 through the air, including a touchdown, as New York beat the Bears 47-7.

His numbers dipped a bit over the next couple of seasons, though the Giants did reach the title game again in 1958, but he had a nice bounceback year in 1959, when he gained 768 yards receiving and 1308 total, which put him on the All-Pro First Team for the 4th time in his career.

He was struggling a bit the next year when a hit from Chuck Bednarik knocked him unconscious on the field, and the resulting concussion convinced him to retire from football. After a year and a half away from the game, the Giants convinced him to return as a wide receiver.

He returned for 3 more seasons, and even made the Pro Bowl in 1963, but numbers from those seasons weren't counted toward his ranking in this countdown, since his position was not running back during that time. He finally retired for good after the 1964 season.

Gifford's 1956 MVP and championship season is the biggest reason that he is on this list, but he was a very good and versatile back for many years in New York. He led the team to the championship game 5 times, and even though he only ended up with one title, he was a huge part of the reason they won, and he is one of the best to have ever played the game.

After rushing for 1616 yards and winning a national title as a freshman in 1980, then 1752 yards, 16 touchdowns, and winning the Heisman as a junior, Herschel Walker left Georgia to sign with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. He played for the Generals for 3 seasons, punctuated with an MVP in the league's final season, before joining the Dallas Cowboys, who drafted him in the 5th round of the 1985 Draft.

As an NFL rookie, Walker shared the backfield with Tony Dorsett, and he rushed for 737 and 12 touchdowns that year, while catching 76 passes for 837 yards on top of that. He led the entire league in yards per touch, and in one game against the Eagles, he had both an 84-yard rush and an 84-yard catch, both for touchdowns.

In his second season, he led the league in scrimmage yards, picking up 891 on the ground and 715 through the air, and was named to the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro Second Team. His increased role led Tony Dorsett to demand a trade, which he would get after the season, leaving the backfield to Walker.

The next season, he had the most rushing yards of his career by far, amassing 1514 while starting every game, but scoring only 5 touchdowns along the way. His 2019 scrimmage yards were also the best of his career, and earned him another All-Pro Second Team selection.

Walker struggled to open the 1989 season, averaging only 3 yards per carry through the first 5 games, following which he was traded to the Minnesota Vikings for 5 players and 6 draft picks, a trade that set the Cowboys up as a great team for years.

He played 2 full seasons in Minnesota, never reaching his previous heights, but he was still a good back. He had 825 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns in 1991, but after not living up to the hype in Minnesota, he was not resigned, instead leaving for Philadelphia for the 1992 season.

Walker had 1070 rushing yards in his first season as an Eagle, the second and last time he would eclipse 1000 in his career. Over the next couple of years his role changed, and he played more often as a kick returner than running back. In 1994 he had the distinction of being the first player ever to have a 90 yard rush, a 90 yard reception, and a 90 yard kick return in the same season.

He signed with the New York Giants for the 1995 season, mostly returning kicks again, then left to return to Dallas, where he spent his final 2 seasons in that same role. After 12 seasons in the NFL, and 15 total as a pro, he retired after the 1997 season.

Walker's career got off to a fast start, but went downhill quickly after being traded away from Dallas. He was still at least productive through the rest of his career, but he never made it back to the superstar level he reached early on. He never made it past the divisional round of the playoffs in his career, but he rarely missed a game and played for a long time, and he is definitely one of the best to have played the game.

After 2 years in junior college and one year as a third-string running back at Auburn, Brandon Jacobs transferred to Southern Illinois, where he ran for 992 yards and 19 touchdowns, which put him on the national radar and enabled him to be selected by the New York Giants in the 4th round of the NFL Draft, with the 110th overall pick.

Jacobs served as backup to Tiki Barber in his first two seasons, getting most of his carries near the goal line, which resulted in him scoring 7 touchdowns as a rookie despite logging only 38 carries, and 9 more carries the next year.

With Barber's retirement, Jacobs became the team's starter in 2007, and he racked up 1009 yards on 5.0 yards per carry. He scored the winning touchdown for New York in the divisional round of the playoffs, and was the starting back as the Giants upset the undefeated Patriots in the Super Bowl.

He was even better the next season, finishing with a few more yards at the same rate per carry, but increasing his touchdown tally from 4 to 15, a major improvement. Though the team won their division that year, they were upset in their first playoff game, ending their bid for a repeat title.

The next year was a down year for Jacobs, as his average carry dropped to only 3.7 yards, and he lost his starting role after the season as a result. He had a very strong season in 2010 out of the backup spot, getting nearly the same number of yards as the season before on 77 fewer carries.

He remained as a backup in 2011, but couldn't duplicate his previous season's production, but he was able to help the Giants reach another Super Bowl, once again facing the Patriots. He picked up 37 yards in a limited role in that game, and came away with a second championship ring.

He was released after that season, signing as a free agent with San Francisco, but he injured his knee in the preseason, and ended up missing the first two months of the season. Once he returned, he was rarely used, getting only 5 carries in 2 games before being suspended by the team for complaining about his role. He was released by the 49ers right before the playoffs.

He returned to the Giants for the 2013 season, playing in 7 games before suffering another injury, which put him out for the season and ended his career. He is the Giants all-time leader in rushing touchdowns, and has the fourth-most rushing yards of any Giant.

His career, like that of many running backs, was cut short by injuries, but he was a very solid running back at his peak, and was a big part of 2 championship teams, and he is ranked here as one of the best to play the position.

Buffalo had the week off, so they easily held on to the top spot in the NFL rankings, while the Monday night game made a huge difference, raising Chicago up 12 spots while dropping the Patriots 9 notches. The Giants moved into the top 10 with their 6-1 record, which is the #2 record in the entire league, and also in their division. Here are my full current rankings and playoff picks:
