NBA Rankings - 11 Jan

The Spurs are back on top after going 3-0 this week, all against teams that still have a decent chance at the playoffs. They were helped along by the struggles of the teams that were ahead of them, with the Thunder losing to the worst team in the West (Utah) and the coldest (Denver), and the Pacers, who despite going 4-1 did not play any opponent of note and lost in Atlanta. Here are my full current rankings:

Denver, which had been the coldest team in the league for weeks, suddenly turned it around this week and became the hottest team, building off a win against Memphis to finish last week with 3 more wins, and these weren't just wins. They beat the Lakers and Celtics by more than 20 points, then ambushed Oklahoma City, previously the #1 team, by a margin of 13. Maybe Andre Miller's blowup at his coach was just what the Nuggets needed.

The other team to catch fire this week was Brooklyn, a team I had predicted to challenge for the title this year, who finally seemed to wake up, extending their win streak to 5 games in impressive fashion, ending Golden State's 10-game winning streak for #4 and beating the Heat in overtime for #5. They only play twice this week, and both are games they should lose on the road, but if they've really turned things around, maybe they'll take down the Hawks and Raptors.

New Orleans was the coldest team this week, losing all 4 contests it entered. The first two were expected, road games at Miami and Indiana, but it looks like they allowed the losses to get into their heads, losing to Washington at Dallas once they returned home mid-week. The Pelicans have proven they can beat the good teams, like they did against Portland just 2 weeks ago, but they won't make the playoffs without being more consistent against lower-level competition.

Pick of the Day #63

Southern

I've learned that it's always smart to pick against Grambling State, and tonight is no exception, especially since the Jaguars are probably the best team in this weak conference.
