Soslan Lyudvikovich Ramonov was born on January 1, 1991 in Tskhinvali, USSR, which is now part of Georgia, but he has always competed for Russia. In 2014, he won the World Championship in Freestyle Welterweight wrestling, and 2 years later, he made his only appearance in the Olympics.
There was no clear favorite heading into his event in the 2016 Olympics, as the event included the defending Olympic gold and bronze medalists, plus the current #1 wrestler in the world, plus Ramonov, a recent world champion. There were 21 wrestlers competing, so 10 had to compete in the first round by random draw, and Ramonov was one of them, and he won his first bout 7-1.
The rest of the tournament was even more dominant for Ramonov, who won his next match 11-3, then posted a 6-0 shutout in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, the match was ended after just 3:33 after Ramonov built an 18-7 advantage, winning on superiority. That put him through to the final, where he faced the defending gold medalist Togrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan, and that match was even shorter, lasting just 2:06 before Ramonov was declared winner by great superiority in an 11-0 shutout.
His overall score in his 5 Olympic matches came out to 53-11, an absolutely dominant performance, and his two biggest wins were the ones he saved for last. He competed for several more years, but did not make the Olympic team in 2021, and has since retired. In his lone Olympic appearance, he destroyed every competitor in his way, winning each match by at least 6 points, and shutting out the defending champion to take the gold, which makes him one of the greatest Olympians of all time.
