College Football Rankings - 8 Nov

With their big win over Florida State yesterday, the Clemson Tigers solidified their hold on the #1 spot in my rankings, becoming the only team in the nation to be ranked in the top 10 in both strength of schedule and margin of victory. The Tigers are also the only team projected to finish the regular season undefeated, and they are virtually a lock to do so, with only Syracuse, Wake Forest, and South Carolina left en route to the ACC title game, in which they have already clinched their berth. Here are this week's full rankings:

Playoff Picks

There is still no doubt in my mind that Clemson will reach the playoff this season, for reasons already stated above.

Utah's win yesterday was huge for the Pac 12 Conference, which was looking like it would be shut out of the playoff last week. Now that the Utes look like the probable South Division champion, that means that Stanford will not have to face red-hot USC in the title game, and I believe that with wins over Notre Dame and Utah to close out the season, the Cardinal will snag a berth in the playoff.

Ole Miss' overtime loss to Arkansas yesterday opened the door for Alabama to take the SEC title, even if they lose to Mississippi State this week. Even with a second loss to a Mississippi school, the Tide will win the AFC West with the tiebreaker over LSU, then will knock out 1-loss Florida in the title game, who should be in the top 4 heading into that game.

I see Notre Dame getting the last playoff spot despite losing to Stanford to close out the season. That loss will initially drop them out of the top 4, but after Florida and Utah lose in conference title games the next week, the committee will select the Irish to replace them due to their #1 strength of schedule, which will include 2 losses on the season, which will be against the top 2 teams in the final rankings.

The Big 10 will be left out after Ohio State loses to Michigan to end the regular season and undefeated Iowa gets upset by Nebraska on the same day. The Big 12 will miss out for the second year in a row after Baylor loses twice in November as they face the other 3 top teams in the conference back-to-back-to-back, with TCU, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State each taking a loss in a brutal month as well, and the Cowboys unable to climb high enough to represent the conference, finishing at #5 or #6.
