College Football Rankings - 1 Nov

Many of the top teams in the nation took the week off this week, including half of the top 10, but there were plenty of good games going on that helped to shape the overall picture of the season. Clemson was solid once again, and was able to hold off Oklahoma to retain the top spot for another week, but there are still 4 teams that have previously held the top spot in my rankings lurking in the top 10, waiting for their shot to steal it back. Here are this week's full rankings:

Playoff Picks

I believe that Clemson will be the only team in the nation to finish undefeated, and with a pretty strong schedule, there is no way they will be left out of the playoff as the champion of the ACC.

The Big 12 should have a member included this year, but it is a 4-horse race this year, with Baylor, TCU, and the Oklahomas all in contention. I believe that Baylor that all 3 undefeated teams in the conference will lose at some point, and that Baylor will end up in the playoff as the strongest of the 4.

Alabama's early loss to Ole Miss may actually end up helping the Crimson Tide, because I project them to finish tied with Ole Miss with one conference loss, meaning that the Rebels will play in the SEC title game against Florida, where they will be knocked off by the Gators. If Alabama has not lost another game, the Crimson Tide will be playoff-bound, but if Mississippi State knocks off the tide, which I believe they will, then I will have to go with the Gators as the SEC's playoff team.

The 4th team to reach the playoff should be the champion of the Pac 12. Currently, Stanford has a stranglehold on the North Division and is virtually assured of reaching the title game. In the South, I project that Utah and USC end up tied at season's end, with the Trojans' victory last week breaking the tie and sending USC to the title game, where they will upset Stanford and win the Pac 12. Unfortunately, the voters will look at their 3-loss record, all piled up under Steve Sarkisian, and leave the Trojans and the Pac 12 out of this season's playoff.

That leaves an opening for one more team, and Notre Dame will be in that conversation right up until the final week of the regular season, when they will lose to Stanford, giving them a second loss on the season. That will leave the door open for Ohio State to sneak in again this year, after they beat Michigan State but lose to rival Michigan in the regular season finale, ending their bid for an undefeated season. The win over the Spartans will mean they still play in the conference title game, where they will destroy either Iowa or Wisconsin, just like last year, and earn the 4th seed and a chance to defend their title.
