College Football Rankings - 15 Nov

Of the top teams in the nation this week, most either struggled when they shouldn't have or lost to a team they should have beaten, with only a few exceptions, namely Alabama, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Because of the struggles at the top and a ton of upsets, there has been some nice movement in the rankings this week, including a new #1 team, with the Sooners taking over at the top after they beat Baylor on the road last night. Here are my full rankings, followed by my college football playoff picks:

After Alabama beat Mississippi State, the one team remaining that I thought had a chance against the Tide, and did it in impressive fashion, I no longer have any doubt that they will reach this season's playoff, and could be the #1 seed. After Cupcake Week in the SEC, they face Auburn, who is not very good this year, then Florida in the SEC title game. I see Florida reaching #4 by that time, but losing to Alabama in a true play-in game.

Although Clemson struggled yesterday against Syracuse, I still don't see them losing a game this year, with only Wake Forest and South Carolina left in the regular season. North Carolina could put up a fight, but I don't see the Tar Heels pulling off an upset, so the Tigers will be headed to the playoff, just as it's looked for several weeks.

The other spots are a bit trickier to predict, but I see Oklahoma making the move and reaching the top 4 in time for the final results to come in. With yesterday's big road win at Baylor, I see the Sooners reaching #7 in the committee's rankings, and wins over TCU and Oklahoma State will only further solidify their place.

There will be a lot more carnage this season, with Iowa losing to Nebraska, Notre Dame to Stanford, and Ohio State to Michigan, leaving an opening that could allow a team to rise quickly over the final few weeks. I see Michigan snagging the final spot with a powerful run through its final few games, much like Ohio State did last year. The Wolverines will beat Penn State easily this week, then knock off undefeated Ohio State to earn a spot in the Big 10 title game, where they will hand Iowa its second straight loss and leap over the Gators to reach #4 in the final weekend.

It appears that it is too late for the Pac 12 to get into the playoff at this point. UCLA and Utah suffered crushing upsets yesterday, and Stanford, which may still have a chance if they can win out, will probably lose to USC in the Pac 12 title game, and I don't see a 3-loss conference champ or a 2-loss Utah making up enough ground to be included this year.
