College Football Rankings - 8 Sep

Week two is finished, and now each of the 125 FBS teams has played at least once, which makes these rankings a little more meaningful, since they are based primarily on this season's results now, with last season being de-emphasized. Last week's #1 team, Alabama, did not play, so they sat at home and watched as the Oregon Ducks flew past them into the top spot. Whether it remains that way will depend heavily on next weekend's game at Texas A&M, the toughest opponent on Alabama's schedule. A road win against a top 10 team would most likely earn the Crimson Tide the top spot and put them squarely in the championship picture, but they've still got to play the game. Here are my current rankings for each team, along with each team's predicted final record and odds of going undefeated, including any conference championship games.

Oregon claimed the top spot by cruising into Virginia, having a normal week, then heading back home. The Cavaliers fought hard last week to top BYU, and it looked like they might actually turn out to be a pretty good team, but Oregon showed that they are just average as they rolled over them from beginning to end. One impressive stat worth noting: The Ducks have not given up a point in the second half yet this season, despite playing all 4 of those quarters in full garbage time mode.

Baylor is getting a lot more respect from me than they are from the national voters, and it's hard to understand why. This week they demolished Buffalo, a team that hung around for 3 quarters with #2 Ohio State just the week before. The Bears did not allow a score from the Bulls in the final 47 minutes of action, during which time Baylor scored 7 touchdowns. Their ascension to the top level of the rankings increases the odds that there will be undefeated teams in each of the 3 power conferences this season, creating another BCS mess in the final season under the current system.

Ohio State moves into the top 10 this week after wiping out San Diego State despite losing quarterback Braxton Miller in the first quarter to a knee injury. Neither of their opponents has been worth fearing so far, luckily for them, and it will stay that way for a couple more weeks, with games against California and Florida A&M. They top off their September cakewalk with one of their toughest games of the season, a visit from Wisconsin, which has not yet allowed a point this season.
