College Football Rankings - 13 Sep

Another week is now complete in college football, and it was another week filled with FBS teams playing FCS cupcakes, with another 25 games played against the lower division in addition to the 46 in week one. Fortunately, there will be very few of these the rest of the way, outside of the SEC's famous November cupcake week. The top 5 remained the same, just in a different order, but there are a few new entries in the top 10. Here are my full rankings after 2 weeks:

Georgia Tech is now in the top 10, even though they haven't played a real team yet. They beat FCS foe Alcorn State by 63, then took out Tulane, one of the worst in FBS, by 55. Although it's tough to say how they'll play against a real team with only that data, we do know for sure that they have a strong offense, and they just might surprise some people when they go to South Bend to face Notre Dame this weekend.

Toledo's first game of the season was cancelled due to weather, so they opened the season yesterday against Arkansas, one of my preseason favorites, and the Rockets played really tough against the Razorbacks, holding on for a 16-12 victory, which gives them a great chance at an undefeated season and a chance at a New Year's bowl berth. We can't tell yet if Arkansas was overrated or Toledo was better than expected, but at least one of these teams is not who we thought they were.

Mississippi State moved into the top 10 even after losing last night, but the Bulldogs weren't bad in their loss to LSU. They fell behind early, trailing 21-6 midway through the third quarter, then battled back, scoring 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to get within 2 points, but a failed two-point conversion kept them from tying the game, and a missed last-second field goal kept them from winning. Even without the win, playing that well against LSU is never a bad thing.
