NCAA Football Rankings - 2 Dec

There were a lot fewer games than usual this week, and even fewer upsets, so the rankings didn't shift much heading into bowl season. Georgia, which was picked to lose by 6, ended up losing by 7, so the loss hardly affected their rating at all, and left them in the #3 spot. As usual, there are deserving teams (Ohio State, UCF, Georgia) who will not have a chance to compete for the championship this season, so I'm also including my breakdown of how a 16-team playoff would be seeded, and how I would expect it to go. Here are the final regular season rankings:

16-Team Playoff

In this model, I give each of the 10 conference champs an automatic berth, then add in 6 wild card teams, with no conference allowed to have more than 2 representatives in the playoff. Here is how it would be seeded, going according to the final Committee Rankings:

1. Alabama - SEC champ
2. Clemson - ACC champ
3. Notre Dame - Independent wild card
4. Oklahoma - Big 12 champ
5. Georgia - SEC wild card
6. Ohio State - Big 10 champ
7. Michigan - Big 10 wild card
8. UCF - AAC champ
9. Washington - Pac 12 champ
10. Washington State - Pac 12 wild card
11. Texas - Big 12 wild card
12. Syracuse - ACC wild card
13. Fresno State - MWC champ
14. Appalachian State - Sun Belt champ
15. UAB - Conf USA champ
16. Northern Illinois - MAC champ

First Round

(1) Alabama over (16) Northern Illinois
(2) Clemson over (15) UAB
(3) Notre Dame over (14) Appalachian State
(13) Fresno State over (4) Oklahoma
(5) Georgia over (12) Syracuse
(6) Ohio State over (11) Texas
(7) Michigan over (10) Washington State
(8) UCF over (9) Washington

Second Round

(1) Alabama over (8) UCF
(2) Clemson over (7) Michigan
(6) Ohio State over (3) Notre Dame
(5) Georgia over (13) Fresno State

Semifinals

(1) Alabama over (5) Georgia
(2) Clemson over (6) Ohio State

Championship

(1) Alabama over (2) Clemson

While the final result may end up being exactly the same, I believe 2 of the final four teams would likely change, and the smaller conference champs would at least get a chance to play for something, because currently they play without any hope of winning a championship.
