College Football Rankings - 11 Oct

The Michigan Wolverines took over the top spot in this week's rankings, just a few weeks after I declared that it would take more than a change at coach to make this team good. It turns out that I, like many others, were wrong about Michigan and Coach Harbaugh. The Wolverines have pitched 3 consecutive shutouts, two against ranked opponents, and are sitting on a 5-1 record, with the lone loss coming against Utah, the only undefeated team remaining in the Pac 12, and that loss was on the road by only 7 points. Will they keep it up next week against #4 Michigan State? I believe there is a chance, as the Spartans are the most overrated of team in the country right now. Here are my full rankings for this week:

Baylor is new to the top 5 this week, the highest ranking of any undefeated team this week, and they made it that high despite playing the second-easiest schedule of any team so far this season. The only reason they are this high is that they have the largest average margin of victory in the nation, and it isn't even close, but they will have to start proving themselves beginning now, with a very good West Virginia team heading to Waco next week.

TCU joined the Bears in the top 10 this week, returning to the upper reaches of the rankings after a two-week absence. The Horned Frogs have looked fine offensively this season, reaching 50 points in 5 straight games, but they have also given up at least 37 in three of those games. One thing that really helped them this week was their 50-7 win against Texas last week, because the Longhorns pulled off a huge upset over Oklahoma yesterday, making TCU's win look even better.

It was tough to know what to make of Washington through 4 weeks, with close losses to California and Boise State, both very good teams, and wins over Sacramento State and Utah State, which aren't so much. With their Thursday night road win at USC, they showed that they are closer to the level of the first teams than that of the latter ones, and have put themselves squarely in the race for the Pac 12 North title, which is now wide open after Oregon lost their 3rd game of the season for the first time in many years, and did it very early.
