College Football Rankings - 12 Oct

The #1 team lost for the second straight week, with both losses coming to the same team, yet somehow that team (Mississippi State) is still not #1. The Tigers remain ahead of the Bulldogs, thanks to a slightly tougher strength of schedule and the fact that Mississippi State had home field advantage in the head-to-head matchup. Here are my full rankings for this week:

Georgia rejoined the top 10 this week after their first road win of the season, but this was not just any ordinary win. They went to Missouri and shut out the Tigers 34-0, and they did it without Heisman candidate Todd Gurley, who was suspended just prior to the game after it was discovered that he earned money for signing autographs. The Bulldogs pulled together and posted the most impressive win of any team this season, which puts them solidly at #4, behind 3 conference foes.

Oregon returned to the top 25 after earning their second marquee win of the season, 42-30 at UCLA. They bounced back nicely from an embarrassing and surprising home loss to Arizona last week and showed that they are still the best team in the Pac 12, although the conference is not nearly as strong as it has been over the past few years, with only 2 teams in my top 25.

Nebraska also joined the top 25 this week after a bye week, mainly because several lower-ranked teams didn't play up to par this week, allowing the 1-loss Huskers to sneak in. Nebraska's lone defeat came against their only decent opponent, but it was a close road loss to Michigan State, who is ranked just a few spots higher.

Playoff Picks

These are the teams I would choose to play in this season's playoff, along with a couple of alternates:

Mississippi State - SEC Champ
Oklahoma - Big 12 Champ
Marshall - Possibly undefeated
Auburn - Great record, toughest schedule

Alternates: Ole Miss, Ohio State, Baylor, Georgia
