After a college career at Texas A&M that ended with him winning the 1957 Heisman Trophy, finishing with 6 rushing and 5 passing touchdowns, John David Crow was drafted with the second overall pick in the 1958 NFL Draft by the Chicago Cardinals.

He scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery in his very first NFL game, and was named to the Pro Bowl in just his second season. After those first two seasons in Chicago, the Cardinals moved to Saint Louis, and Crow had his best pro season during that first year in Missouri. He led the league with 5.9 yards per carry, 1533 scrimmage yards, but also with 11 fumbles. He finished 3rd in MVP voting that season and was named to his only All-Pro Team.

He struggled through injuries the next year, but bounced back in 1962, scoring a career-high 17 touchdowns, while also leading the league in fumbles again with 14. He missed all but three games the following season, and struggled when he returned in 1964, leading to his leaving the Cardinals to head west and play for the 49ers.

In his first season with San Francisco, he surpassed 1000 total yards for the second time in his career, and came in 3rd in Comeback Player of the Year voting while being named to the Pro Bowl for the 4th and final time. He played 3 more seasons with the 49ers, and his production dropped each year, and in his final season he switched over to tight end before retiring.

After his playing career ended, Crow joined the coaching ranks, starting out as an assistant to his college coach, Bear Bryant, at Alabama. He also spent time as an assistant in the NFL, then 6 seasons as a head coach at Northeast Louisiana. He passed away in 2015.

His pro career may not have lived up to the hype of a Heisman winner, but he had one very good season, and was a solid player for several other years. He overcame a minor stroke at birth that left his face disfigured, and was still able to become one of the best running backs of all time.

Top 100 NFL Running Backs - #100: Tony Nathan

Tony Nathan

Teams

Miami Dolphins (1979-1987)

Appearances - 6 (1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985)

All-Purpose Yards (#8-1979)

Yards per Touch (#1-1980, #2-1981, #4-1984, #5-1985, #7-1983)

Tony Nathan played 4 full seasons for the Alabama Crimson Tide, highlighted by his junior season, when he rushed for 642 yards and 15 touchdowns, and a national championship during his senior season. Afterward he was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 3rd round of the 1979 draft with the 61st overall pick. He caught only 22 passes in college, but that would become a bigger part of his game in the NFL.

As a rookie, he was primarily used as a kick returner, and he led the league in yards per punt return, which earned him All-Pro First Team honors. The following year he became a full-time running back, which is where he spent the remainder of his career.

In his first season as a running back, he led the league in yards per touch, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and 10.3 yards per reception, which worked out to an average of 7.8 for each time he touched the ball. The next season he became the Dolphins' starting running back, and he led the league in yards per carry that season, while averaging 95 total yards per game, the highest of his career.

Nathan was the Dolphins' starting running back in two Super Bowl appearances, first in Super Bowl XVII, then again two years later in Super Bowl XIX. In the latter game, he finished with 101 total yards, including 10 receptions, which was the second-most of any player in history at the time. The Dolphins lost both games, and haven't reached another Super Bowl since.

After 5 seasons as the team's starting running back, 4 of which ended with him totaling over 1100 yards from scrimmage, he returned to a backup role, mostly catching passes out of the backfield in 1986, but doing so at a good rate, then finally hardly being used in his final season. He went on to become an assistant coach for the team, and has been a running backs coach for 4 NFL teams and 1 college team since his retirement.

Nathan may not be a big name today, but he had several years as a very good running back who was skilled at receiving as well, and he deserves to be remembered as one of the best at what he did.

Top 100 NFL Runnings Backs of All Time - Intro

I have been working for a while on a ranking system for the top running backs of all time in the NFL, and I finally feel that I am ready to share it with the world. One of the difficulties is that there are limited statistics to work with, with carries, yardage, touchdowns, fumbles, and yards per carry the main categories. I also included receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, though they are weighted less than rushing numbers, as rushing is the primary responsibility for these players.

Most players on this list were classified as running backs, though other roughly equivalent positions are also included, such as fullback and halfback. Players were compared to the averages in each category for each individual season in which they played, and were given points based on how much above average they performed in each category, and were not given points for seasons in which they were below average overall. Because of this, longevity is not always a guarantee of a high ranking, because many backs, even many of the greats, were below average at times, especially near the end of their careers. There are actually several players on this list who had very short careers that included short bursts of greatness. Players were also given a bonus for championships won, though this factor was smaller than in other rankings systems, because running backs seem to have a smaller impact on team success than quarterbacks or NBA superstars.

The NFL recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, so there are players from all eras included here, many of which you have probably never heard of, as there were many that I was not familiar with. Also, with the lower emphasis on running in the modern game, there are fewer current running backs that qualified for this countdown than you saw on my lists of quarterbacks or NBA players. There are only 6 active NFL players on this countdown as of 2024.

Here is a breakdown of the primary team, decade, and college team for the players on this list, and I will list the players on this post as I reveal them over the next few months. There are 3 current franchises that do not have a single player on this list, and one defunct franchise (the New York Yankees of the 1940s AAFC) that has a player represented, while the 49ers have 11 players total, by far the most of any team. There are 10 colleges with at least 3 players on the list, dominated by SEC schools, with Georgia's 5 players the most of any school. I hope you enjoy this list, and maybe discover some new favorite players or remember some that may have escaped your memory.

There is only a single game remaining in the NBA season, and for the 4th season in a row, Nikola Jokic is the best player in the league, and my pick to win the MVP.
