College Football Rankings - 8 Dec

Florida State blew away Duke like they had every other foe they faced this season, ending up as the only undefeated team and the extremely obvious #1, and although Auburn will almost definitely be their opponent in the championship game, it's not clear that they are the best one-loss team. Baylor, Alabama, and Ohio State also feel they have a claim to that title, but each lost their game later in the year than the Tigers, and to better opponents. Thank goodness for a playoff next season, and let's hope they realize that it needs to be expanded beyond just 4 teams later on as well. Here are my full rankings for this week:

Even after defeating the Sun Devils twice this season, Stanford ended up behind Arizona State in this week's rankings. That seems very strange, even to me, so I looked at all the factors to see what had happened. Arizona State's average margin of victory this season was a full point better than the Cardinal's, and the Sun Devils did it against a slightly tougher schedule, playing Wisconsin in non-conference while Stanford played San Jose State. The slight advantage in both of those categories kept the Sun Devils ahead by a very slim margin, meaning that they are the better team, but they just don't match up well with Stanford, so the Cardinal will still win most every time these two teams play.

You'll also see that Missouri finished just ahead of Auburn in these rankings, another seeming mistake, and this one is even tougher to justify, since Auburn played a tougher scheduled than the other Tigers. Missouri's margin of victory was slightly higher this season, but the only real difference I can see is that Mizzou played a non-conference road game against Indiana, while Auburn hosted Washington State, pretty much the equal of the Hoosiers. With home field worth 5 points to the home team, playing an additional road game can make a difference.

Oklahoma State's loss to Oklahoma dropped them out of the BCS discussion, and rightfully so. They may have been the only team to defeat Baylor, but they lost twice, once to a pretty good Sooner team, and once to a horrible West Virginia squad that won only 4 times all season. A loss like that is inexcusable, especially with the Big 12 being a little weaker this year than in seasons past.

Florida State

We all know by now that the Seminoles have a great football team, but their basketball team is not bad either. They host Jacksonville State tonight, and it should be a blowout a la FSU football.
