The only one of the non-"power" conferences with multiple teams in the top 25 is the Mountain West, which has 3 teams at 8-0 so far this year. BYU, last year's conference champion, is third out of the 3, with UNLV and San Diego State looking stronger so far this year.
How did UCF not get into the rankings after their upset of Florida? I had them in the top 10 before the upset, they're still sitting there in my top 10, but the AP still has them ranked #30 overall. You will be hearing more about this team as the season goes on.
The polls are also overlooking the Pac 10 a little this year, probably as a result of last year's Pac 10 being the weakest it had ever been. Both Arizona and Washington have lost close games to Kansas, currently undefeated and a national title favorite, and Washington State also has the potential to surprise people this year.
Saint Mary's may look out of place in the top 10, being a small-conference school with 2 losses, but those 2 losses came to undefeated teams from the Mountain West, and their other games this year have been completely dominant. I think this may be the year that they pass Gonzaga as the best team in the West Coast Conference.
Butler is a surprise entry into the top 25 this week, a week where they lost again, and they are the only team in my top 25 with 3 losses. It helped them that their loss to Duke was closer than expected, and their early loss to Louisville is looking better every day.
