College Football Rankings - 6 Oct

We have a new #1 team this week, as Baylor's defense wasn't able to prevent West Virginia from racking up 42 points, which allowed Oregon to pass them by and reclaim the top spot for this week. The Ducks are ranked #2 in the nation in both scoring offense and scoring defense, winning their games by an average score of 59-12, but this week they will face their first real test, when they visit the Washington Huskies, who nearly upset Stanford last night. Here are my full current rankings, with each team's predicted final record included.

Miami moved up to #5 after earning their second win over a top-13 team early in the season, handing Georgia Tech a 45-30 loss yesterday, which looks good next to their win over Florida a few weeks ago. They still must face Florida State in November, and possibly again in December, which will be a major test for the Hurricanes, but there is a good chance that the two Sunshine State teams will split those matchups and earn matching bids to the BCS.

Clemson would like to prevent that second Miami-FSU matchup, and to do it they'll have to beat Florida State when they host them in 2 weeks. The ACC now has 3 teams in the top 6 thanks to the Tigers blowout at Syracuse, and their win over Georgia in week one is still looking very impressive. Other than that opening game, Clemson has not given up more than 2 scores to any of its opponents.

LSU was trapped in a close road game against Mississippi State last night, leading by 2 points late in the 3rd quarter, but that's when the entire game changed, as the Tigers scored 31 straight points to make a possible upset turn into a blowout which earned them a spot in the top 10 and the highest ranking of any SEC team, despite their loss to Georgia, which came on the road and was only by a field goal.

Perhaps the most overlooked team in the SEC is the "other" undefeated, Missouri, which has beaten 4 decent teams but still no one good enough to gain them any recognition. That will change this weekend, one way or the other, when the Tigers travel to Georgia to face the Bulldogs, who will not want to take a second loss this early in the season, and especially not to an unproven SEC East foe.
