NBA Rankings and All-Star Snubs - 14 Feb

The NBA has extended the All-Star Break to a full week this season, and the teams stopped play on Thursday to get ready. With the shortened week, the top 6 teams remained intact, but there was plenty of movement in the bottom half of the top 10. Here are the full rankings for this week, with my picks for the All-Star team below:

The Oklahoma City Thunder went 3-0 this week, moving up to a projected playoff spot as a result of beating both the Clippers and Memphis during the week. Last week they split a pair of games with New Orleans, which is also in competition for that final playoff spot, but the Thunder look like the hot team with both of its stars healthy.

The Chicago Bulls went 4-0 this week, opening with a 35-point blowout at New Orleans and capping it with a 15-point win against a hot Cleveland team. This came on the heels of a 3-game road losing streak, which included losses against Phoenix and the Lakers, which will probably not make the playoffs. Which Chicago team will show up the rest of the way?

All-Stars

These are my picks for the players that should be in tomorrow's All-Star Game. Voted starters are marked with an S, replacement starters with RS, and reserves with R.

Eastern Conference

Starters

F - LeBron James - Cle - S
F - Pau Gasol - Chi - S
C - Nikola Vucevic - Orl
G - Jimmy Butler - Chi - R
G - Kyrie Irving - Cle - R

Reserves

G - John Wall - Was - S
G - Kyle Lowry - Tor - S
F - Paul Millsap - Atl - R
F - Kevin Love - Cle
C - Al Horford - Atl - R
F - Greg Monroe - Det
G - Brandon Knight - Mil

The biggest snub in the East is Vucevic, who may play for a terrible Orlando team, but is averaging 19.6 points and 11.3 rebounds per game. Carmelo Anthony, who is injured and shouldn't be playing anyway, would have been the next guy up after these 12. Jeff Teague and Kyle Korver were chosen by the coaches as reserves due to Atlanta's record, along with Chris Bosh, and while Bosh and Teague should have been considered, they did miss a few guys who should have been chosen.

Western Conference

F - Anthony Davis - NOP - R
F - Blake Griffin - LAC - S
F - LaMarcus Aldridge - Por - R
G - James Harden - Hou - RS
G - Stephen Curry - GSW - S

Reserves

G - Chris Paul - LAC - R
G - Damian Lillard - Por - R
C - Marc Gasol - Mem - S
G - Russell Westbrook - OKC - R
F - Gordon Hayward - Uta
G - Klay Thompson - GSW - RS
C - DeMarcus Cousins - Sac - R

Injury Replacements

F - Tyreke Evans - NOP
F - Rudy Gay - Sac

Starters Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, and Dirk Nowitzki will not be playing in the All-Star Game, and the coach has already chosen James Harden and Klay Thompson for two of the starting spots. Harden should be the MVP so far, so that was an obvious choice, but Thompson gives the team three guards in the starting lineup, so I would have put Aldridge in instead, since he should have been starting. Since Anthony Davis will also not be playing, I would move Marc Gasol and Gordon Hayward to the starting lineup, while adding the two other forwards to the bench as replacements. Kevin Durant and Tim Duncan were both chosen by the coaches as All-Stars, but Duncan is only in as a lifetime achievement award, and Durant has missed more than half of the games so far, and shouldn't be playing at this point. No huge snubs here, but Hayward has been better than expected and should have been chosen.

Pick of the Day

The Cowboys are hoping to be considered for a tournament berth, but have a horrible strength of schedule. They are coming off a huge loss at San Diego State (26 points), but today they play San Jose State, which is still winless in Division I.
