College Basketball Rankings - 25 Feb

There are only 2 weeks left in the regular season, and several teams are getting hot at the right time, including 2 that are making their first appearance in the top 25 this week. Indiana avoided the upset bug that struck Miami and Michigan State this week, allowing them to keep their spot at the top, and to distance themselves from the nearest competition. Here are my current top 25 teams, with AP ranks in parentheses and teams grouped by similar level of performance.

TW. (LW) Team (Week) Overall (AP)
1. (1) Indiana (1-0) 24-3 (1)

2. (2) Florida (1-1) 22-4 (8)

3. (4) Gonzaga (2-0) 27-2 (2)
4. (3) Louisville (1-0) 22-5 (10)

5. (5) Duke (2-0) 24-3 (3)

6. (7) Syracuse (1-1) 22-5 (12)
7. (10) Wisconsin (1-0) 19-8 (17)

8. (8) Michigan (1-0) 23-4 (4)
9. (6) Pittsburgh (1-1) 21-7 (23)
10. (12) Kansas (2-0) 23-4 (6)
11. (11) Michigan State (0-2) 22-6 (9)

12. (15) Ohio State (2-0) 20-7 (16)

13. (9) Miami (1-1) 22-4 (5)
14. (13) VCU (1-1) 22-6 (27)

15. (21) Middle Tennessee (2-0) 25-4 (36)
16. (16) Oklahoma State (1-1) 20-6 (15)
17. (NR) Georgetown (2-0) 21-4 (7)
18. (18) Creighton (1-1) 22-7 (NR)
19. (22) Missouri (1-1) 19-8 (37)
20. (14) Colorado State (0-2) 21-6 (26)
21. (19) Arizona (2-0) 23-4 (11)
22. (NR) Virginia (1-1) 19-8 (NR)
23. (25) San Diego State (2-0) 20-7 (NR)
24. (NR) Wichita State (2-0) 24-5 (29)
25. (NR) Belmont (2-0) 22-6 (37)

Dropped Out

(20) Saint Mary's (2-0) 24-5 (30)
(17) Minnesota (0-1) 18-9 (NR)
(23) Kentucky (2-0) 19-8 (NR)
(24) Illinois (1-1) 20-9 (31)

Ranked Teams by Conference

Big 10 - 5
Big East - 4

SEC - 2
MWC - 2
Big 12 - 2

WCC - 1
Atl 10 - 1
Pac 12 - 1
Sun Belt - 1
OVC - 1

The Georgetown Hoyas finally made their debut in my top 25 this week, despite the fact that they are in the top 10 of the AP rankings. The biggest thing that held them back was a weak nonconference schedule, where their biggest win came against an overrated UCLA team, and they lost to Indiana in their only chance at a marquee win. Lately they have proven how good they are, winning 9 straight games in a very difficult Big East, including wins over 4 top 25 teams, the latest being Syracuse, which was especially important since it came on the road.

Belmont is back in the top 25 again this week, riding the strength of their dominant victory over Ohio in their Bracketbuster matchup on Saturday. They've also beaten a couple of other teams that are currently heading for the tournament, Middle Tennessee and South Dakota State, and one more win will lock up the top seed in the Ohio Valley tournament starting in 2 weeks.

Virginia is also making their first top 25 appearance of the season, but they are in the opposite position of Georgetown in relation to the national polls. They haven't even garnered a vote in the AP poll, despite the fact that they nearly upset Miami on the road this week and they blew out Georgia Tech yesterday. They also own a road win over Wisconsin, even if it happened before the Badgers were getting national attention.

Wichita State also came back this week, avenging their earlier loss to Indiana State with a win on the road, then beating a very good Detroit team during Bracketbusters to put themselves back in good position for an at-large bid if they are unable to win the Missouri Valley. This weekend they travel to play Creighton for the regular season conference title, and a win would definitely lock them in to March Madness.

College Basketball Rankings - 18 Feb

Indiana and Florida both played extremely well this week, keeping themselves ahead of the rest of the pack as we head into the final month of the regular season. The rest of the top 10 was shaken up, but only one team dropped from the top 10, and that was Ohio State, which was blown out last night by the team that now replaces it at #10. Here are my current top 25 teams, with AP rankings in parentheses and teams grouped by similar level of performance.

TW. (LW) Team (Week) Overall (AP)
1. (1) Indiana (2-0) 23-3 (1)
2. (2) Florida (2-0) 21-3 (5)

3. (5) Louisville (2-0) 21-5 (10)
4. (6) Gonzaga (2-0) 25-2 (3)

5. (4) Duke (1-1) 22-3 (6)
6. (7) Pittsburgh (0-1) 20-6 (20)
7. (8) Syracuse (1-1) 21-4 (8)

8. (3) Michigan (1-1) 22-4 (7)
9. (9) Miami (2-0) 21-3 (2)
10. (12) Wisconsin (1-1) 18-8 (19)
11. (11) Michigan State (2-0) 22-4 (4)

12. (16) Kansas (2-0) 21-4 (9)

13. (21) VCU (2-0) 21-5 (24)
14. (13) Colorado State (2-0) 21-4 (22)
15. (10) Ohio State (1-1) 18-7 (18)
16. (20) Oklahoma State (2-0) 19-5 (14)
17. (14) Minnesota (1-1) 18-8 (27)
18. (19) Creighton (1-1) 21-6 (37)
19. (15) Arizona (1-1) 21-4 (12)
20. (17) Saint Mary's (1-1) 22-5 (35)
21. (24) Middle Tennessee (1-0) 23-4 (34)
22. (NR) Missouri (1-1) 18-7 (33)
23. (18) Kentucky (0-2) 17-8 (NR)
24. (NR) Illinois (2-0) 19-8 (29)
25. (22) San Diego State (0-2) 18-7 (NR)

Dropped Out

(25) Belmont (0-1) 20-6 (NR)
(23) Southern Miss (2-0) 20-6 (NR)

Ranked Teams by Conference

Big 10 - 7
Big East - 3
SEC - 3
MWC - 2
ACC - 2
Big 12 - 2
WCC- 2
MVC - 1
Atl 10 - 1
Pac 12 - 1
Sun Belt - 1

The Big 10 has started to dominate the rankings, with 7 teams in the top 25, and another, Iowa, in good position to make the NCAA tournament. The usually dominant Big East has only 3 teams in my top 25, but all 3 are in the top 7, and they also have 3 other likely tournament teams and 4 that are also on the bubble.

A dominant showing against the Mississippi teams gave the Missouri Tigers the boost they needed to climb back into my top 25, even with the loss to Arkansas that followed. This week will be one of the toughest they face all season, with the #2 Florida Gators coming to town and a trip to Kentucky following that. They could benefits from home court against Florida and Noel's injury for Kentucky, however, so don't count them out in either game.

Wisconsin lost on Valentine's Day to Minnesota in their 3rd straight overtime game, but they recovered in style, upsetting Ohio State by 22 points yesterday and moving into the top 10 for the first time since my preseason rankings. They do it with a balanced attack, with 6 players who play starters minutes each helping out with the scoring.

Illinois made a case for entering the rankings a week ago after upsetting Indiana and Minnesota, but they had to prove they could keep it up after losing 6 of the previous 7, and they did just that this week. The Illini beat both Purdue and Northwestern by at least 20 points, and an upset over Michigan this weekend would pretty much lock them in to a tournament berth.

VCU has re-entered the AP top 25, taken over the top spot in the Atlantic 10 standings, and made the biggest jump of any team in my rankings this week. The Rams will be facing the meat of their conference schedule over the next 10 days, travelling to Saint Louis and Xavier before hosting conference favorite Butler to open the month of March. If they can get past the Billikens, I think they should be able to win out and take the regular season conference title.

29. (28) Orlando (1-2) 15-37

30. (30) Charlotte (1-3) 12-40

New Orleans is finally coming to life, and Anthony Davis is finally starting to look like a #1 pick. In their 99-63 win over Portland on Wednesday, Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in only 28 minutes of action. The win was also the 4th in the last 5 games for the Hornets, who won each of those games by at least 11 points, making them the league's hottest team heading into the break.

The only team to beat the Hornets this week was Toronto, which has now won 4 straight games. What makes this streak even more special is that 3 of the wins came over top 10 teams, and the other came over the league's hottest team. Toronto has climbed into 10th place in the East, and could be in the running for a playoff berth if they can stay hot after this weekend.

The Atlanta Hawks have won three of their last 4, and the only loss came against, you guessed it, New Orleans. Their most recent win was a 32-point blowout of the Magic in Orlando, and before that they won in Dallas against a team that has also been coming on lately. Josh Smith scored 26 and 30 in the two wins, which was easily his best back-to-back games of the season.

LeBron James earned a lot of press this week for his 6 straight games of 30 points and 60% shooting, which set a new NBA record, but even more important was the fact that Miami won each of those games. Even when he lost the streak last night by one shot, the Heat still managed to win in Oklahoma City, knocking the Thunder from the top spot in the process and making LeBron the favorite to win another MVP.

College Basketball Rankings - 11 Feb

4 of the top 5 teams in last week's AP poll lost to an unranked team this week, sending the rankings into disarray. Michigan's loss at Wisconsin was not unexpected, since they haven't won in Madison yet this century and the Badgers are now ranked, but Indiana looks like the team that was most easily forgiven, especially after beating Ohio State on the road yesterday. Here are my current top 25 teams, with teams grouped by similar level of performance and AP rankings in parentheses.

TW. (LW) Team (Week) Overall (AP)
1. (2) Indiana (1-1) 21-3 (1)

2. (1) Florida (1-1) 19-3 (7)

Michigan State is the hottest team in the nation right now, and it couldn't be happening at a better time. The Spartans have 5 of their next 6 games against ranked teams, 3 of which are at home, which could help them pull off a couple big upsets when Michigan and Indiana come to town. They are currently tied for the conference lead, and all 4 of their losses have come against teams that should be in the tournament next month.

Middle Tennessee has reentered the top 25 after a 7-week hiatus, and this latest surge has come thanks to their dominance of the Sun Belt Conference. They have won 11 games in a row, most by double digits, and they had perhaps the biggest blowout of anyone this season when they knocked off the Troy Trojans 93-41 on Saturday. Even if they win the rest of their games, they still aren't getting enough respect from the national voters to make the tourney without winning their conference title.

Saint Mary's remained hot this week, taking two tough road games against San Diego and Santa Clara, setting them up perfectly for a rematch with Gonzaga on Thursday, which should determine the winner of the regular season conference title. With how hot both teams have been lately, it should be a great game, much like their showdown last month, which ended with the Gaels losing by 5 in Spokane.

Louisville took quite a hit in the AP rankings this week after losing to Notre Dame, but they actually moved up in my rankings. One of the big reasons is that the loss was to a ranked team, and that it came in quintuple overtime, so it really wasn't as much a loss as proof of two very evenly matched opponents. They don't have another ranked opponent this month, a rarity in the Big East, but that should help them rise up again before they visit Syracuse in March.

NBA Rankings - 8 Feb

San Antonio has extended their league-leading winning streak to 11 games and increased their lead over the Thunder in the standings to 1.5 games, but they still haven't quite caught up to the top team in my rankings.  They have closed the gap for the second straight week, and one more week at the current pace would put them ahead of Oklahoma City for the first time in nearly a month. Here are my current rankings for each team, with teams grouped by similar level of performance.

TW. (LW) Team (Week) Overall
1. (1) Oklahoma City (2-1) 37-12
2. (2) San Antonio (2-0) 39-11

3. (4) Miami (3-1) 32-14

4. (5) Denver (3-0) 32-18
5. (3) LA Clippers (1-3) 35-16

6. (8) Houston (2-1) 27-24
7. (7) New York (3-1) 31-16

8. (12) Indiana (4-0) 31-19
9. (6) Memphis (1-2) 30-18

10. (11) LA Lakers (3-1) 23-27
11. (9) Chicago (1-3) 29-20
12. (10) Golden State (1-2) 30-19

13. (13) Brooklyn (2-1) 29-20
14. (14) Atlanta (1-2) 27-21
15. (18) Boston (4-0) 26-23
16. (16) Dallas (2-1) 21-28
17. (17) Utah (3-1) 28-22
18. (15) Milwaukee (1-3) 25-23

19. (20) Portland (2-2) 25-24
20. (21) Minnesota (1-3) 18-28
21. (22) Toronto (1-2) 17-32
22. (19) New Orleans (1-2) 16-33
23. (23) Detroit (1-3) 18-32
24. (25) Washington (2-2) 13-35
25. (26) Philadelphia (2-1) 21-27
26. (24) Phoenix (1-3) 17-33

27. (27) Cleveland (2-1) 15-34

28. (28) Orlando (0-4) 14-35

29. (29) Sacramento (0-3) 17-33

30. (30) Charlotte (0-3) 11-37

Indiana has won 5 straight games against teams currently among the top 10 teams in the East, making them the hottest team in the league right now. All 5 wins came by at least 10 points, and the Pacers have now moved up to #3 in the East and are only 3 games behind Miami for the top spot. David West scored 30 and 29 in wins over Miami and Chicago, who are both in line for home court in the first round of the playoffs.

Houston had one of the biggest blowouts of the week for the second week in a row, destroying the Golden State Warriors by 31 points in a game in which they tied the NBA record for most 3-pointers made in one game. Omer Asik has been dominant inside, grabbing at least 14 rebounds in 6 straight games for the Rockets.

Denver has extended their winning streak to 8 games, second-longest in the league, and has now won 14 of their last 16 games to move into 4th place in the West. In yesterday's win over Chicago, which was only giving up an average of 91 points per game, the Nuggets reached 100 points before the end of the 3rd quarter and relaxed through the 4th quarter of a 32-point blowout.

New York was also hot this week, blowing out several of the lower-tier teams before sputtering against the resurgent Washington Wizards. Tyson Chandler grabbed 20 rebounds in each of the Knicks' 3 wins tying a franchise record set by Willis Reed in 1969. New York's next two games are against teams that are struggling because of injuries, Minnesota and the Clippers, so they should be able to get back on the winning track.

College Basketball Rankings - 4 Feb

It's just over a month until the most exciting tournament in sports begins, and teams are starting to position themselves to secure those coveted wild card berths just in case they are unable to win their conference. Of the 31 current conference leaders, 18 are teams that I picked to win before conference play began, while 9 of my picks are currently #2 in their conferences, which leaves only 4 of my picks outside the top two in their conference. Here are my current top 25 rankings, with teams grouped by similar level of performance and AP rankings in parentheses.

The hottest team in the nation this week was Indiana, who destroyed in-state rival Purdue before taking down #1 Michigan on Saturday to reclaim the top ranking in the AP poll. They're still not #1 in my rankings, but they have closed the gap with Florida, and another week like the one they just finished could push them over the top. This weekend they visit Ohio State, which would be another chance to boost their resume of strong wins.

Gonzaga moved into my top 4 this week for the first time in history, riding the strength of a decisive victory at Loyola Marymount early in the week. Since they most likely will not face another team ranked #13 this season (both of their losses came to #13 teams), they will probably win out and could end up with a coveted #1 seed in the tournament next month.

Kentucky established themselves as the #2 team in the SEC this week after blowing out Ole Miss on the road on Tuesday. The defending champs have lost more games than usual this season, but they are getting good at the right time, and they just may have a tournament run in them, although a repeat of last season is still highly unlikely.

Saint Mary's reentered the top 25 this week by extending their winning streak to 7 games, with their only loss since Christmas coming by 5 points at current #4 Gonzaga, which is much closer than anyone should get playing in Spokane. The Gaels also have two opportunities to impress the panel this month, with home games against both Gonzaga and Creighton. They should be able to win at least one of them, but there's no reason they can't take both, which would make them a lock for a good seed.

NBA Rankings - 1 Feb

The San Antonio Spurs' winning streak has reached 9 games and they now have the league's best record, but they still haven't taken over the top spot in my rankings. They have closed the gap with Oklahoma City, who held on to the top spot despite losing to the Lakers, but still have the largest average margin of victory in the league. Here are my current rankings, with teams grouped by similar level of performance.

Houston has turned things around again, coming back from a recent 7-game losing streak in strong fashion this week. The game that best represents the turnaround was their 45-point blowout of the Jazz in Salt Lake City, which set a record for the largest loss by Utah in their home arena in history. They also won by double digits over the Hornets and the Nets, both teams which had been hot recently.

Led by first-time All-Star Jrue Holiday, the Philadelphia 76ers had their best week in a long time, beating the New York Knicks decisively and taking down the Washington Wizards, who had finally found their winning groove. They still haven't had a winning streak since November, but they have a chance tonight against Sacramento, one of the few teams they should be beating.

The Los Angeles Lakers also heated up this week, winning three in a row for the first time since late December, beating both Utah and Oklahoma City in the process. They still haven't won a road game since December 22, but the progress they've made at home has to translate over to the road eventually, right?

Milwaukee's 27-point win at Detroit would have been the biggest road win most weeks, but Houston's blowout of Utah the day before took the focus off of the Bucks. Milwaukee had just come off a big win over Golden State, but a loss against Chicago right after the Detroit game slowed the momentum they were starting to build.
